The short version
- Tanto is a budgeting app made by Wharfside Digital Inc., a British Columbia company. This is the agreement between you and us.
- You must have reached the age of majority in your province or territory (and be at least 18) to have an account.
- Every new account gets a 30-day free trial of everything. After that, a subscription costs $8.49 per month or $75 per year, in Canadian dollars, plus applicable taxes.
- Subscriptions renew automatically. You can cancel at any time from Settings. Monthly plans run to the end of the paid month; annual plans are refunded pro-rata for the unused months.
- Your budget data is yours. You can export it or delete your account whenever you like.
- AI features are optional and off until you turn them on. Their output is a suggestion, not advice.
- If we change prices or these Terms, we tell you at least 30 days ahead and the change applies only from your next renewal. If a change increases what you pay or reduces what you get, you can cancel without penalty (annual plans are refunded pro-rata). Fixes, improvements and changes the law requires don't trigger a refund.
- If something goes wrong, talk to us first — we'll work with you in good faith to put it right. If we can't, you keep every normal legal option: no forced arbitration, no class-action waiver, and you can go to court in your home province or in British Columbia.

1. Who we are and how this agreement forms
Wharfside Digital Inc. is a company incorporated in British Columbia, Canada (incorporation number BC1604866), doing business as Tanto Budget (registration FM1117485). Our mailing address is PO Box 462, Salmon Arm Stn Main, Salmon Arm, British Columbia V1E 4N6, Canada. You can reach us at ops@wharfsidedigital.ca or +1 (236) 836-4119. In these Terms, "Tanto", "we", "us" and "our" mean Wharfside Digital Inc.
These Terms of Service (the "Terms") and our Privacy Policy form the agreement between you and us for the Tanto web application at app.tantobudget.ca and any related services (together, the "Service").
How you accept. You accept these Terms by ticking the box on the sign-up form and clicking "Create account". Under the British Columbia Electronic Transactions Act and equivalent laws across Canada, that click is your signature. We record the version of the Terms you accepted, the language you viewed them in, and the date and time. When you confirm your email address, we send you a copy of this agreement's location so you can keep it, and the current version is always available in the app under Settings → Terms & privacy.
Before you sign up, please review the information in sections 3 to 6: what the Service is, what it costs, how renewals work, and how to cancel. The sign-up form gives you the chance to review and correct what you enter before you submit it.
2. Who can use Tanto
To create an account you must:
- have reached the age of majority in the province or territory where you live (19 in British Columbia, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut; 18 elsewhere), and in every case be at least 18 years old;
- provide accurate information and keep it up to date; and
- be creating the account for your own personal use. One person, one account.
Tanto is designed for people who live in Canada — its budgeting tools assume Canadian dollars, Canadian registered accounts and Canadian pay cycles. You may use it from elsewhere, but we make no promise that it suits your circumstances.
3. What Tanto is (and isn't)
Tanto is a zero-based budgeting tool. You enter or import your transactions, assign every dollar to a category or goal, and Tanto shows you where you stand. It includes manual transaction entry; imports from CSV, OFX/QFX and (with your consent) PDF bank statements and receipt photos; tracking for TFSA, RRSP and FHSA contribution room; reports; and optional AI-assisted categorization.
Tanto is not:
- a bank, a payment service, or an investment dealer. Tanto never holds your money, never connects to your bank accounts, and never moves funds;
- financial, tax, investment or legal advice. Figures in Tanto (including contribution room and tax estimates) are calculations from the information you provide. Verify anything important with the Canada Revenue Agency, your financial institution, or a qualified professional; and
- a guarantee of accuracy. Imports and AI features can misread documents. Review what Tanto suggests before you rely on it.
Technical requirements. The Service runs in a current version of a modern web browser with JavaScript enabled and an internet connection. We support the current and previous major versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge.
Changes to the Service. We improve Tanto continuously and may add, change or retire features. If we retire a feature that a paid plan materially depends on, we will give you at least 30 days' notice and section 7 applies.
4. Free trial, plans, and prices
Free trial. Every new account includes a free trial of the full Service for 30 days from sign-up. No payment details are required to start it, it never converts into a paid subscription by itself, and we will send you a reminder before it ends. When the trial ends, your account becomes read-only: you can still view and export everything, but you cannot add or change budget data until you subscribe. You can delete your account at any time.
Subscription. Tanto offers one subscription that includes every feature:
| Plan | Price | Billing period | Total per period |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $8.49 CAD per month | Every month | $8.49 CAD plus applicable taxes |
| Annual | $75.00 CAD per year | Every 12 months | $75.00 CAD plus applicable taxes |
All prices are in Canadian dollars and exclude sales taxes. The exact tax (GST/HST and any provincial sales tax) is calculated from your billing address and shown to you, together with the total you will be charged, on the checkout page before you confirm. Taxes are the only amounts added to the listed price. There are no set-up, cancellation or other fees.
Payment. Payments are processed by Stripe. You provide your payment card and billing address to Stripe on its secure checkout page; we never see or store your full card number. By subscribing you authorize Stripe to charge your card the plan price plus taxes at the start of each billing period. If a payment fails, Stripe will retry and email you; if it still fails after the retries, your subscription ends and your account becomes read-only.
Promotional codes. If you use a promotional code, the discount, its duration and the price that applies afterwards are shown at checkout. When a promotional period ends, the regular price in the table above applies.
5. Automatic renewal
Subscriptions renew automatically so your budget doesn't stop working:
- Monthly: renews every month for a further month at the then-current monthly price, until you cancel.
- Annual: after your first 12-month term, your subscription continues for an indeterminate term, billed 12 months at a time in advance at the then-current annual price, until you cancel. Because you can cancel at any time for a pro-rata refund (section 6), you are never locked into a further year.
Renewal reminder. For annual subscriptions we email you 60 days before each renewal date with the renewal date, the price that will be charged, how to cancel, and a reminder that the subscription will renew unless you cancel. We keep a record of that email being sent. For monthly subscriptions, which you can cancel at any time without charge, Stripe's receipt each month serves as your notice.
Renewal reminders, receipts, failed-payment notices and trial-end reminders are essential service messages about your account. You cannot unsubscribe from them while you have an account, and they are not marketing.
6. Cancellation and refunds
How to cancel. Open the app, go to Settings → Cancel subscription, and confirm. That's it — no phone call, no waiting. You can also email ops@wharfsidedigital.ca and we will cancel for you within two business days. Deleting your account (section 13) also cancels your subscription immediately.
Monthly plan. Cancel at any time, before or after a renewal, without charge or penalty. Your subscription stays active until the end of the month you have already paid for, then stops. Because you keep what you paid for, no refund is issued for the current month.
Annual plan. Cancel at any time, before or after a renewal, without charge or penalty. We refund the unused portion of your annual payment, calculated by whole months remaining in the current 12-month period (for example, cancelling with 5 full months left refunds 5/12 of the annual price plus the corresponding taxes). Refunds go to your original payment method within 15 days of your cancellation. If you would rather keep using the Service until the end of the paid year, tell us and we will schedule the cancellation for the renewal date instead, with no refund.
Statutory cancellation rights. Consumer protection laws in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and other provinces give you the right to cancel an online contract within a set time — usually 7 days after you receive a copy of the contract, or 30 days after contracting if you never received one — if certain required information wasn't given to you. Nothing in these Terms limits those rights, and any refund those laws require is paid within 15 days.
Free trial and free accounts. There is nothing to cancel — simply stop using Tanto, or delete your account.
7. Changes to prices or these Terms
Which parts we may change. We may update sections 3 (the Service), 4 (plans and prices), 8 (your account), 9 (acceptable use), 11 (AI features), 12 (intellectual property), 18 (communications) and 19 (general terms), and the Privacy Policy, as the Service evolves. We may change section 6 (cancellation and refunds) and section 15 (limitation of liability) only in ways that do not reduce our obligations or increase yours.
How we tell you. For any change that affects you, we will email you the new text and a plain-language explanation of what changed, at least 30 days and no more than 60 days before it takes effect. Price changes take effect only at your next renewal after that notice period, never mid-term.
Your choice. If a change increases what you pay or reduces what you get, you may cancel at any time before the change takes effect — and, if you live in Quebec, within 30 days after it takes effect — without charge or penalty, with a pro-rata refund of any prepaid annual amount. If we ever fail to give the notice described here, the change does not apply to you.
Corrections of typographical errors, changes required by law, and changes that only benefit you may take effect immediately; we will still tell you about them.
8. Your account
You are responsible for keeping your password confidential and for everything done through your account. Choose a strong, unique password (at least 12 characters — Tanto enforces this). If you think someone else has accessed your account, change your password immediately and email us. You must confirm your email address before you can sign in, because we use it for security and service notices.
9. Acceptable use
Use Tanto only for personal budgeting and only within the law. You must not: share your account or let others use it; attempt to access other users' data or the Service's infrastructure; probe, scan or test the Service for vulnerabilities without our written permission; use automated tools to scrape the Service or overwhelm it with requests; upload malicious code; use the AI features to process documents that belong to someone else without their permission; or resell, sublicense or commercially exploit the Service. We may suspend or end accounts that break these rules (section 13).
10. Your data
You own your data. Everything you enter into or import into Tanto — transactions, categories, goals, accounts, documents — remains yours. You give us only the limited permission we need to store, process and display it in order to run the Service for you, and to create aggregated statistics that cannot identify you.
Export. At any time you can download all of your data from Settings: your transactions as CSV, and everything (budgets, accounts, categories, goals, contributions, transactions) as JSON. You can also ask us for a copy, in a structured, commonly used format, and we will provide it within 30 days.
Deletion. You can delete your account from Settings. Deletion is immediate and permanent; see the Privacy Policy for what happens to backups.
Privacy. Our Privacy Policy explains what we collect, why, who processes it and where, and your rights. It is part of this agreement.
11. AI features
PDF statement parsing, receipt scanning and category suggestions are powered by an artificial-intelligence provider, Anthropic, PBC, in the United States. These features are off until you turn them on. Before the first use, Tanto shows you exactly what will be sent (the document you scan, or the payee, amount and date of the transactions you choose to categorize, plus your category names), where it goes, and how long it is kept, and asks for your express consent. You can withdraw that consent at any time in Settings → Privacy & data, and nothing further is sent.
AI output is a suggestion for your review. Tanto never applies an AI suggestion automatically: you confirm imported transactions before they are saved, and you accept or reject each category suggestion. AI can misread amounts, dates and merchants. You are responsible for checking the result. Tanto makes no automated decision about you based on this processing.
AI features are subject to fair-use limits (currently 100 PDF statements, 300 receipts and 2,000 categorization requests per month) to keep them sustainable; the app tells you if you reach a limit.
12. Our intellectual property
The Service — its software, design, text, graphics, and the names "Tanto" and "Tanto Budget" — belongs to Wharfside Digital Inc. and is protected by copyright and trademark law. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the Service under these Terms. You may not copy, modify, reverse-engineer or create derivative works from the Service, except to the extent the law allows regardless of this clause. Feedback you send us may be used to improve the Service without any obligation to you.
13. Ending the agreement
By you. Delete your account from Settings at any time. Any subscription is cancelled at that moment; an annual plan is refunded pro-rata as in section 6.
By us. We may suspend or close your account if you materially breach these Terms (for example, section 9), if the law requires, or if we discontinue the Service. Except where we must act immediately to protect the Service or other users, we will give you at least 30 days' notice by email and keep your data available for export during that period. If we close your account for reasons other than your breach, we refund any prepaid, unused subscription period pro-rata.
Sections 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 19 survive the end of this agreement.
14. Warranties and disclaimers
This section does not apply to consumers in Quebec, whose rights under the Consumer Protection Act and the Civil Code of Québec apply instead.
We work hard to keep Tanto accurate, secure and available, and we take our legal obligations seriously. Beyond the commitments written in these Terms and any warranties that consumer protection law implies and does not allow us to exclude, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available". We do not promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that imports or AI features will be accurate, or that it will meet your particular needs. Nothing in this section limits rights that your province's consumer protection legislation gives you and that cannot be waived.
15. Limitation of liability
This section does not apply to consumers in Quebec to the extent it conflicts with the Consumer Protection Act or the Civil Code of Québec.
What we are always responsible for. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence; for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; for gross negligence or wilful misconduct; for a breach of our privacy and security obligations that a court finds we could not fairly exclude; or for anything else that cannot be excluded or limited under the law that applies to you, including consumer protection law.
What we are not responsible for. Subject to the paragraph above, we are not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for loss of profits, savings, data or opportunity, arising from your use of or inability to use the Service — including decisions you make based on figures in Tanto, financial institution fees, or missed contribution room. Tanto is a budgeting aid; the financial decisions remain yours.
Cap. Subject to the first paragraph, our total liability to you for all claims connected with the Service in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of (a) the amounts you paid us in that 12-month period and (b) CAD $100.
16. Your consumer rights and reviews
These Terms do not take away any right you have under the consumer protection legislation of your province or territory, including the British Columbia Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act, the Ontario Consumer Protection Act, the Alberta Consumer Protection Act and the Quebec Consumer Protection Act. If anything in these Terms conflicts with a right that legislation says you cannot give up, the legislation wins.
Reviews. You are free to review Tanto anywhere, positively or negatively. Nothing in these Terms restricts that, and we will never penalize you for it.
17. Disputes and governing law
Talk to us first. If something has gone wrong, email ops@wharfsidedigital.ca with the details. We will respond within 10 business days and work in good faith with you for 30 days to resolve it. This step is voluntary; it never prevents you from going to court or to a regulator.
No forced arbitration. These Terms do not require arbitration and do not waive your right to bring or join a class proceeding. We may agree to arbitrate a specific dispute after it arises, but only if you choose to.
Governing law. These Terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia and the federal laws of Canada that apply there — except that, if you are a consumer, the mandatory consumer protection laws of the province or territory where you live also apply and prevail where they conflict.
Courts. You may bring a claim against us in the courts of British Columbia, which we agree may hear it, or in the courts of the province or territory where you live. Small claims courts and the British Columbia Civil Resolution Tribunal remain available to you for claims within their limits. Nothing here requires you to sue outside your home province.
Regulators. You may also complain to a consumer protection authority: Consumer Protection BC, Service Alberta, the Ontario Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery, the Office de la protection du consommateur (Quebec), or your provincial equivalent; and for privacy matters, the authorities listed in our Privacy Policy.
18. How we communicate with you
We send account and service messages — email verification, password resets, receipts, renewal and trial reminders, failed-payment notices, security alerts, and notices of changes to these Terms — to the email address on your account. These are not marketing and you cannot opt out of them while you have an account. We do not send marketing email unless you have expressly opted in, and every such message will identify us, include our mailing address, and let you unsubscribe with one click, as Canada's anti-spam legislation requires.
19. General terms
Entire agreement. These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. Severability. If a court finds any part of these Terms unenforceable, the rest continues to apply, and the unenforceable part is limited to the minimum extent necessary. Assignment. You may not transfer this agreement. We may transfer it to a successor that acquires Tanto or Wharfside Digital Inc., and we will tell you if that happens; your rights under these Terms and the Privacy Policy continue unchanged. Force majeure. Neither of us is liable for delays caused by events beyond our reasonable control, but you may cancel under section 6 at any time. Waiver. Not enforcing a term is not a waiver of it.
Language. These Terms are published in English and in French. Both versions have the same meaning; in the event of a discrepancy, the version you accepted governs. If you live in Quebec, the French version was made available to you first, and by choosing English you expressly requested that this agreement be drawn up in English. Les présentes conditions sont offertes en français à tantobudget.ca/fr/terms.
